I am Happy to Play

 

Hello all!  We know it is a bit late – but here is the next item created by Patricia Basson, our Design Team Member for July, with some of the goodies in her kit.  We hand over to her now, and she will explain step by step how she created this amazing card

It was supposed to be a card, but I am loving it so much that it will rather stay with me! At first it may not look like much, but look at the steps I went through to get the back ground paper and you will understand why I love it ...

Using a sheet of the plain white paper from my DT pack, I used Adirondack Colour Wash; Butterscotch and Meadow on it. Remember to first wet the paper with water in order for the Colour Wash to spread, I also sprayed it some more with water to get a good wash...yes...you do end up with a very wet sheet of paper, but after a blast with the heat gun, it is ready for the next step.

After blending some Distress Inks onto the sheet, I applied the Spritz and Flick technique from Tim Holtz to achieve the droplet effect.

Next I stamped with one of the Spills and Splatters stamps and Archival Ink.

Then it was a run through the Cuttlebug using the Harlequin embossing  folder. Isn't it neat how one can transform an ordinary white piece of paper into something this interesting?

I wasn't done with it. I applied a layer of Crackle paint over the piece that I wanted to use, and lightly scraped the excess paint of, leaving a layer in the de bossed area. I did however forget the first and most important chemistry rule of Distress Ink...it is water soluble and will react with moisture, there for some ink was scraped of with the crackle pain! Next time I will (hopefully) remember to first seal the Distress Ink before applying the crackle paint! But I was still happy with the final result.

Next in line were the Mixed Minis alphas. When I first received my DT pack containing the Antiqued Bronze Distress crackle paint, I had to experiment with it, I applied it to a scrap piece of paper, and knowing that the cracking can be sped up with a heat gun once it starts to crack, I did the same with this, only to find that it started to bubble! Of course I just loved the overly grunged look it gave me and thus applied this technique to my alphas! I know for some it will be un neat, but I loved the look for this project!

After colouring my ribbon, I stamped one of my DT stamps from the Old Curiosity Shop with Cranberry Earthstone Adirondack inks onto it. The two die cut pieces are from Graphic 45, Le Cirque Tags.

I hope any one visiting this post will also like the transformation of  that plain white paper into a usable back ground...

Miss Match with an Attitude

Hello all!  After one of the wettest and coldest weekends ever in the Eastern Cape, we are back online!  Our prayers are with those who were not as fortunate as most of us who were shelterd by the elements, and we hope that they will be ok.....

We received some new stock on Friday, and we managed to add it to the website, so you are welcome to go and get it while it is HOT!  Here are a few peeks...

   

   

We will be leaving for our Bloemfontein Excursion on the 23rd, and we are quite excited about that!  We are busy knitting scarves, and gloves, and buying thermal vests - we just want to make sure we don't freeze on the way there!  Dames, ons is opgewonde oor ons besoekie aan julle deel van ons pragtige land, en ons hoop julle is net so opgewonde!

We had to postpone the Tim Holtz class in PE to this Saturday, 21 July, so we are all excited about seeing the 12 eager Tim Holtz fans on Saturday!  Hopefully it will be a dry day!

We are almost fully booked for all Jowilna Nolte's classes 8-11 August - there are one or two seats still open in the card classes, mixed media class and one of the Scrapbook Classes.  Remember that all the classes are different!  Don't miss out on this wonderful opportunity!  Book your seat here

We are busy with a project trying to raise some money for the SPCA in Humansdorp - it serves the whole Kouga region, and is very close to shutting down.  We are donating card bases and some items to make Christmas cards with, and Desrae and Nettie are working hard at making LOADS of cards we can donate to the SPCA that they can sell to raise funds.  If you have time (or something else) you would like to donate to assist with this fundraising effort, please contact us on 042-2932781, send an email to sales@scrapbookstudio.co.za or visit us at 106 Da Gama Road, Jeffreys Bay.  The SPCA does really wonderful work, and they need all the help they can get.

Colourful Design Team Project!

Patricia Basson created this amazing Canvas Card for this week’s Design Team project!  Wow!   She wanted to use some Distress Inks and do something totally different!  Here are the details directly from her!

Hi there!  Patricia here! I wanted to use some of the seasonal Distress inks and some of the items in my DT Kit. I used some images from the Tim Holtz Grunge board Mixed Minis from my DT Pack.

I used the wings, hearts, stars, hinges and some flourishes. They were glued to the canvas, and covered with a layer of Gesso.

I made my own resist canvas by applying Multi Medium Matt to my Creative Flourish from Layers of Colours. After stamping it on the canvas, I dried it with my Heat gun. I used the Sewing Room Alteration Die from Tim Holtz for the Dress Form. And then I had fun with the inks! I used the Seasonal Re inkers to make my mists that I used.

The heart has some micro beads on it and a layer of crackling medium.

The dress form is coloured with Distress inks using the applicator tool. I am really happy with the way the stamped image came out after the inking!

The wings were also covered with micro beads and a layer of crackling medium.

I am not a great mixed media artist...but I just might play with these techniques some more, for they are really fun to do...

Graphic 45 Design Team Layout

As promised, here are some details on how Patricia Basson, our Design Team Member for July 2012, created this amazing page with some of the products in her kit.  Patricia, over to you!

This is a LO that designed itself as we went along! I had the papers together, found this matching photo of Michelle and then pondered on what to make of it...The papers from my DT pack that I used are Communique Collection 'a Fine Specimen' and Transatlantique Collection 'Exotic Destinations' both from Graphic 45.

The first idea that came to mind was to cut the Diamond shapes out as a frame, so of to cutting I went and when it was done I thought to myself, well what now? 

Looking at the shapes I decided that it would look neat if I also cut, lift and curl the inside Diamond shape a little as well.

While doing the little bit of curling, I went further and did a tight little curl and that looked so neat and interesting that I also curled the black Diamond shape as well, and I ended with a neat frame for my photo! I used a thick needle, but a toothpick would also work...

The next technique is one that I am very fond of using. What you need to do is colour your embossing folder with inks before placing your paper into it and send it through your embossing machine!. You will end up with an already inked embossed image... Just remember to wash your folder afterwards, and beware that some inks might stain your folder, but that will not do any thing to the effectiveness of your folder!

I will post a short tutorial in a while showing the differences between inking the de bossed/recessed area and the embossed area.

I used Graphic 45 Core’dinations papers for this, die cut two labels and added some random Distress Crackle to it

The pen nibs were cut from the Communique Collection 'Pen in Hand' also from Graphic 45. I covered them with some Antique Bronze Distress Stickles from Ranger.

The ink bottles are from the same paper range and covered on the left side with a heavy layer of Walnut Stain Distress Stickles. Did you know that you can heat set Distress Stickles from Ranger? Other than ordinary Stickles they can be heat set without them burning or bubbling! That made them ideal for me to give the bottles a healthy coating of Stickles giving them a very Antique textured appearance.

On the two opposite corners I layered some of the Diamond shapes that I covered with some Crackle Paint and inked with some Vintage Photo Distress Inks.
