Layout using one Large Photo - Step by Step

We often get people who want to use one large, special photo on a page, instead of just putting it into a frame. We used a paper by Kaisercraft that had a pre-printed "frame" on it, that would naturally frame the large photo. We used a large 12 x 12 stencil to add some graphics to the center -although just a small piece of it protrudes around the photo, it just makes the page look grounded. To do this, we took 4 sheets of A4 typing paper, and adhered a thin strip of Tombow Mono Multi (green glue!!) along one long edge of each paper. We then waited for it to dry. We then applied it to the edge of the printed frame, and placed the stencil over it. Using Adirondack Dye Ink ( or any inkpad of your choice) and a blending tool, we added colour. When we were satisfied, we removed the stencil and carefully peeled off the A4 paper sheets. As you may, or may not know, Tombow Mono Multi glue is repositionable when you leave it to dry. We use it for everything. It was the only adhesive used to create this whole layout. All these adhesives are currently on sale here

We used plain white Cardstock and painted it with an Adirondack Denim Paint Dabber to create a strip for the title to sit on. We did the same thing for the journaling mat. We just added some Adirondack Pearl Paint Dabber to the edges, instead of chalk to create a contrast. To create the red and white striped banners, we took off cut pieces of white cardstock and coloured a thin strip with a red Tombow marker ( you can use any marker) and for the striped banner, we just drew lines on it with a ruler. We then added a layer of clear embossing powder to add some shine. For the journaling block we used an index card that was slightly blended with Old Paper Distress Ink and then misted with some Brushed Corduroy home made mist. We then used Walnut Stain Distress Ink to distress the edges. The journaling shapes were cut using a Cuttlebug and a thin steel rule die.

For the title, we used a technique that Jowilna Nolte taught in a class a few years back. It is really effective. You take any old stickers or rubons and glue them (properly!!) to pieces of cardstock cut to size. You then mount that onto chipboard. Chalk the edges ( we used Coffee Archival ink, as we did not want it to blend when we did the next step) and then add a generous layer of Glossy Accents to all the letters. It is really important that the layer with the alphas are adhered properly, otherwise the Glossy Accents will cause them to kind of curl up. The heart was created using a stamp that was inked with Tombow Markers, and then stamped onto white Cardstock. A Heatgun was used and a layer of Clear Embossing Powder was added, the heart was cut out and added to the layout. The off-white strip was once again an off cut, that was blended with Old Paper Distress Ink to match the colourscheme. We hope you enjoyed this and that you will start scrapping those professional photos and add them to a frame on your wall, or a page in your album for all to see! All the products used on this layout that are highlighted with links to our website, are on promotion until our next post! Grab them while they are HOT!

  1. Thanks for your comment on my steam punk page. I used the basic grey sheet of lettering from AGES ago to trace round and cut them out. I kept a sheet, just to use as a stencil.
